Nehru
Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi one of the best mountaineering institutes in Asia.
In this institute the emphasis is mainly laid on the concept of adventure as
well as to follow the guidelines based on conservation and awareness about
environment. Here approx 65% of the total force of the trainees include of army
soldiers. 35% were the locals who organize and teaches about the adventure
courses at diverse places in India. Moreover, NIM was established on the 14th
Nov 1965 for honoring the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru
who was an enthusiastic mountain lover.

Campus:
Nehru
Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi is mainly surrounded by the mountains
and Bhagirathi river and has a beautiful scenic view. Here you will find the
various species of flora and fauna and beautiful gardens which will surely grab
your attention. There is a well established training area which has Outdoor
Artificial Walls, Volleyball Court, Gyan Hall, Graduation Ground and Basketball
Court. There is also a bog library which offers a wide range of books on
mountaineering and allied activities. Furthermore, the guests and expedition
teams who visit to the NIM get the best of stay in the Guest rooms and hostels.

Courses:
The
list of courses provides by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering are as
following:

Adventure Course
The
adventure Course is basically intended for the students and teachers of
schools. Mainly for those who are exposed to the many various activities such
as rock climbing, waterman ship, trekking and bush craft. Here in this course
the lectures on flora and fauna are given as well as activities such as camping
and cooking are also done. Hence, it leads to the trainees to realize their
potential, strength and weakness.
- Basic
Mountaineering Course (BMC)
Basic
Mountaineering Course is basically the foundation course in which the people
are initiated to the mountaineering. The main goals of this course are as
following:
To
guide about the various basic techniques of movement on snow and rock.
Give
the practical and theoretical training to the students of subjects such as
Navigation, Mapreading, Mountain hygiene and many more.
Motivate
the students and enable them to view the mountaineering as an art also not just
an adventure activity.
The
students in this course spend 4 to 6 days at the campus and their next 20 days
are spending in the mountains. During their stay in the mountains, they are
trained abot the snow craft and rock climbing at high heights.

Advance Mountaineering Course (AMC)
In this
course the students are trained to become the potential leaders and duration of
this course is of 28 days. You can be eligible for this course only if you got
A grade certificate the BMC from any well known mountaineering institute. the
training in this course are given for:
Techniques
of climbing on snow, rock and ice
Technical
aspects of mountaineering
Preparation
and implementation of journey in the Himalayas
Trainees
are given an expedition to a peak above the 20000 feet or 6000 meters.

Search & Rescue (S and R)
Search
& Rescue has been established as the regular course from December 1992. The
people who are eligible for this should have A grade certificate in AMC from
any recognized mountaineering institute that are JIM Pehalgam, NIM, HMI
Darjeeling, ITBP training Auli, Gangtok and SGMI.
This
course mainly covers the Rescue techniques on rock, Radio Telephony, Mountain
Navigation, evacuation methods including use of helicopters and many more.
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering is presently the only mountaineering institute
in India conducting this course.

Methods Of Instructions (MOI)
The
main objective of this course is to trained the mountaineers to become the
potential Instructors and can teach the mountaineering related subjects. To the
trainees the practical training is also given so that they can handle the
situations more efficiently. Trainees who have A grade certificate in AMC from
any recognized mountaineering institute are eligible for this course.

Special courses
The
special courses are run by the institutes for various organizations on special
request. These mainly comprise courses for deaf and dumb as well as handicapped
persons. Moreover the training is also conducted on request for the Police,
Schools, Para Military, Military and other organizations. The courses are
conducted by NIM Instructors at diverse clubs and other organizations, all over
India throughout the lean period.
